The Rose Of Versailles started out as a manga, written and drawn by Riyoko Ikeda in 1972. Originally published in the magazine Margaret, it gained massive success, getting adapted into a stage musical by the Takarazuka Revue in 1974, into a live action movie in March 1979, followed by an anime in October of the same year.
Inspired by true historical events, the story takes place in France, in the 18th century, at Versailles. We follow a young girl, Oscar François de Jarjayes, being raised as a boy by her father, a general who longed for a boy to follow his path in the military. When a young archduchess from Austria is sent to France to marry the Dauphin, Oscar is chosen to be her guard. As the years pass, we follow both of their destiny through the events that will lead to the French Revolution.
